I am finally back on the Morgan this week after several weeks lay-off due to injuring my back stacking logs of all things. Anyway, we have been repairing the wood frame and sanding it down ready for treatment. We have also started drilling all the bulkhead holes to accept the new wiring loom. Currently we are stripping and servicing the Armstrong lever arm shock absorbers with new oil, these are easier to service now and install before the wood frame goes back on. Some people have asked “Why are you bothering reinstalling the Armstrong shock absorbers as these are old technology now, when there is a telescopic conversion available?”. Well the answer is simple, apart from the cost point of view (which will be quite expensive once you take into account the cost of the mounting frame, shock absorbers and labour to install). The other reason is simply that the car will feel more modern and lose that Morgan ride appeal.
The first picture shows the shock absorber stripped out, whilst the second shows the oil drained out with lots of thick, black sediment so definitely time for an oil change.
Pictures of the wood frame repair coming soon so look back to see those.
